Animated TV commercials, mostly produced in small New York studios since television’s early days, were a passion of Janet’s from age 13, thanks to her sister at Terrytoons, leading her to open Chelsea Animation Company around 1979; she especially loved and collected these hand-drawn spots from the 1940s through the 1980s, which capture their eras (harried housewives and jazz in the ’50s, psychedelic imagery, OTC drugs, and therapists’ voiceovers in the ’60s), well-crafted short stories designed to catch the eye and sell products, and though credits are rare, listen for Frank Zappa or Gene Wilder’s voiceover in another. • janetscagnelli.com
